4 Family-Friendly Walks In and Around Kemnay

Looking for new places to explore with the kids? Kemnay and its surrounding countryside offer some fantastic family-friendly walks — from gentle buggy-friendly paths to woodland trails and views worth climbing for. Here are four of our favourite spots for a morning wander, weekend adventure, or a spontaneous “let’s get outside” moment.

Kemany is a great spot for some family friendly adventures.

Hi, I’m Jess. As a family we are always on the lookout for new adventures — from local gems in Aberdeenshire to hidden spots further afield.

Every walk we share is one we’ve enjoyed ourselves. If you find something new or notice an update I should make, please let me know!

1. Fetternear Estate

What3Words (car park near bridge): outs.singer.blacked
What3Words (Netherton Business Centre): manhole.monorail.noticing
Toilets: None available.

Fetternear Estate is a well-loved local gem and a great choice for all ages. You can start at the small car park just over the bridge out of Kemnay, or use the larger parking area at Netherton Business Centre.

There are endless little paths to explore — all off-road-buggy friendly. The main track takes you through the estate to the incredible Bishop’s Palace. Feeling adventurous? Walk on to the Shakin’ Brig (an out-and-back route) or head up into Cottown Woods for something longer.

Kids will love the small pump track near the bridge, and many of the paths are bike-friendly, making this a great all-round option.

2. Place of Origin

Parking: Small car park at Fyfe Park
What3Words: fuse.builders.snares
Toilets: None available.

This short but rewarding walk is always a hit with our gang. The trail has a few steep sections, but you’re quickly paid back with sweeping countryside views from the top of the monument.

Little adventurers love climbing the big steps and racing down the “helter-skelter” hill. On the way back down, keep an eye out for the ‘stepping stones’ — the perfect spot for a sit-down and snack.

3. Dalmadilly Ponds

Parking: Small car park, AB51 5PB
What3Words: pounces.backpack.whoever
Toilets: None available.

If you’re heading out with toddlers, Dalmadilly Ponds is ideal. The paths are easy, flat, and short enough to match little legs, with plenty of wildlife to spot along the way.

In summer, the ponds are a popular spot for open-water swimmers and paddle boarders. The loop works well for buggies and balance bikes, and there are benches and grassy areas perfect for snack breaks. A lovely option for a gentle morning or afternoon outing.

4. Blairdaff Woodland Walk

Parking: Small roadside car park on the road toward Bennachie Centre
What3Words: reinvest.hamsters.cherub
Toilets: None available.

This woodland trail had been on our radar for a while — and it did not disappoint. We explored it on an autumn morning and were pleasantly surprised by how peaceful it was.

The full loop is about 1.5 miles, or you can cut through the centre for a shorter walk. There are several fallen trees across the path, but they’re easy to climb over and added a bit of adventure for the kids. The route is best suited to slings or carriers.

Post-Walk Treats: Local Café Options

If you love finishing your walk with a warm drink or cake (same), there are some great nearby options — but always check opening times first:

In Kemnay

  • Café 83 ( our top pick)

  • Bennachie Lodge

  • Takeaway options from Kemnay Farm Shop

Nearby

  • Dan’s Coffee Spot (open in summer)

  • Old Post Office Tearoom, Chapel of Garioch (we love this place but it can get busy, especially on the weekend)

  • Plenty of choices in Inverurie if you’re heading that way
