Family Adventure to Millstone Hill: A Scenic Hill Walk in Aberdeenshire
Looking for a rewarding outdoor escape that’s perfect for budding hill walkers? Come along with us to Millstone Hill, one of our favourite walks in Aberdeenshire!
Millstone Hill is one of our favourite hill walks in Aberdeenshire.
Hi, I’m Jess. As a family we are always on the lookout for new adventures — from local gems in Aberdeenshire to hidden spots further afield.
Every walk we share is one we’ve enjoyed ourselves. If you find something new or notice an update I should make, please let me know!
🗺️ Getting There
Parking can be found at Donview Forestry Car Park, located off Lord’s Throat Road. If you're using What3Words, use: dolly.dude.expert.
There’s parking for several cars, though it can fill up quickly on sunny days. All-day parking costs £3. Just a heads-up—there are no toilets, so plan accordingly!
🚶♀️ The Walk: A 5KM Circular Route
Distance: Approx. 5KM (Circular)
🟠 Note: There may be diversions in place due to fallen trees.
This trail takes you through woodland and opens up into beautiful heather hills, offering spectacular panoramic views from the top. The trail itself is a mix of steep, rocky paths with some large roots and steps. It’s definitely not buggy-friendly, but a great option for younger children who like a bit of a challenge or don’t mind hopping into a carrier for parts of the hike.
We love tackling the gentler, anti-clockwise route—it's a more gradual climb, which feels a bit easier with little legs in tow. The key here is not rushing. Choose a time when you’re not clock-watching, pack plenty of snacks, and let the kids explore at their own pace.
🌟 Highlights
Breathtaking views from the summit as well as from the stone bench, halfway up. One of my favourite spots in Aberdeenshire.
Narrow, winding trails—perfect for keeping curious minds engaged
Two route options to the top: a steep, direct ascent or a longer, easier path
In summer, look out for wild bilberries and in Autumn, the fascinating fungi
A few hidden geocaches to discover along the way
☕ Nearby Cafés (Always Check Opening Times!)
Grant Arms, Monymusk – Not overly child-friendly, but ideal for a takeaway coffee and cake to enjoy at the nearby park
Café 83, Kemnay – Another great local optio.
🥾 Feeling Adventurous?
If you're hiking solo or want to extend your walk, why not tag on a visit to Mither Tap? As you descend from the summit of Millstone Hill (clockwise direction), keep an eye out for the signs on your left. Once you’ve reached the top, retrace your steps and rejoin the Millstone Trail, turning left to descend through the woodland.
🧡 Final Thoughts
Millstone Hill is a brilliant introduction to hill walking for kids, offering a sense of adventure without being too overwhelming. The views are incredible, and there’s always something to see—whether it’s berries, mushrooms, or simply the joy of conquering a summit together.
