The Discovery Trail, Lower Cabrach: A Hidden Gem for Families

If you're looking for a short, family-friendly walk in Aberdeenshire that's packed with things to keep little ones entertained, the Discovery Trail in Lower Cabrach should definitely be on your list.

We stumbled across this walk while searching for routes under 5km on The Mack Walks website, and it turned out to be one of our favourite discoveries. Although the trail itself is only around 2km long, we ended up spending nearly four hours here on a beautiful sunny day!

A hidden gem, this trail was popular with both the older and younger members of our family.

Hi, I’m Jess. As a family we are always on the lookout for new adventures — from local gems in Aberdeenshire to hidden spots further afield.

Every walk we share is one we’ve enjoyed ourselves. If you find something new or notice an update I should make, please let me know!

🅿️ Getting There & Parking

We parked at The Acorn Centre, Lower Cabrach (AB54 4EU).

The car park is relatively small, but when we visited we were the only people there. As far as I'm aware, parking is free, and the start of the trail is only a short walk away.

The Discovery Trail is a community-funded project by the Cabrach Trust, who have created a wonderful route that's easy to follow. Their website also includes trail maps along with information about parking and toilet facilities.

🐸 A Perfect Walk for Little Explorers

One of the best things about this trail is that it's completely buggy-friendly. The paths are flat and easy to navigate, making it ideal for families with young children.

Rather than simply walking from A to B, there are plenty of opportunities for children to stop, explore and play along the way.

Some of our favourite features included:

  • Information boards dotted along the route that tell the story of the local area.

  • A lovely pond dipping spot that was a huge hit.

  • A fantastic nature hide where children can watch wildlife.

  • Activity sheets available inside the hide (don't forget to pack a few pencils!).

  • A beautiful wildflower meadow to wander through.

  • A picnic bench near the end of the trail that's perfect for lunch before heading back.

🔎 Bring a Few Extras

We packed binoculars, magnifying glasses and our crabbing nets so we could have a go at pond dipping.

We weren't particularly successful in finding any creatures, but Millie certainly didn't mind and we all had great fun trying! Sometimes it's the adventure rather than the result that makes the memories.

Don't Rush It

Although the trail is only around 2km, don't be fooled by the distance.

There are so many little places to stop, explore and investigate that it's well worth allowing plenty of time. We spent almost four hours wandering, playing, reading the information boards and simply enjoying being outdoors.

It's one of those walks where children naturally set the pace.

🍰 Where to Stop for Food Afterwards

If you've worked up an appetite, there are several lovely places nearby.

We headed into Huntly afterwards and enjoyed an ice cream from Rizza's, which was the perfect end to our day.

Other options include:

  • Dean's Café in Huntly

  • A takeaway from The Larder

  • Morgan McVeigh's if you're travelling along the A96

  • Kellockbank if you're heading back towards Aberdeen

As always, it's worth checking opening times before you travel.

✨ Final Thoughts

The Discovery Trail at Lower Cabrach is one of those places that quietly surprises you. It's peaceful, beautifully maintained and full of opportunities for children to connect with nature without needing to tackle a long or challenging walk.

If you're looking for an easy family adventure that offers far more than its 2km distance suggests, this hidden gem is well worth the trip.

We'll certainly be back.
