A Family Adventure at Burn O’ Vat, near Dinnet.
Looking for a family-friendly walk in Aberdeenshire that combines nature, adventure, and a little bit of history? Burn O'Vat, near Dinnet, is a fantastic choice. With an easy walk, an impressive natural rock formation, and plenty to keep little explorers entertained, it's a great day out for families.
Burn O’ Vat is a great option for those looking for an adventure without the longer mileage.
Hi, I’m Jess. As a family we are always on the lookout for new adventures — from local gems in Aberdeenshire to hidden spots further afield.
Every walk we share is one we’ve enjoyed ourselves. If you find something new or notice an update I should make, please let me know!
🅿️ Getting There & Parking
We parked at the Burn O'Vat Visitor Centre (AB34 5NB), where there's plenty of parking available. It can get busy on sunny days, but parking is free, with donations welcomed.
The visitor centre is open from 10am–4pm, Easter through October, and is well worth visiting before setting off. It has interactive displays, helpful information about the area, and toilet facilities with baby changing.

🚶♀️ How far is the walk?
The main walk to Burn O'Vat is just over a mile, making it ideal for younger children and little legs. If your family enjoys walking, there are also longer trails nearby, including the beautiful Loch Kinord Circular, which stretches around four miles.
The route is fairly straightforward, but there is one thing to be aware of.
If you're using a buggy, I wouldn't recommend completing the circular route. There's a steep section with steps just beyond the vat that can be difficult to navigate. Instead, simply retrace your steps back the way you came, or consider using a child carrier if you want to explore further.
❤️ Why We Love It
The visitor centre was a lovely surprise, with interactive exhibits that immediately got the children interested before we even started the walk.
The highlight, of course, is venturing into Burn O'Vat itself. Walking through the narrow rock entrance into the hidden natural bowl feels like discovering a secret place. It's a real adventure for children (and adults too!).
If you've got older children with you, it's worth exploring behind the waterfall for an extra sense of adventure. Just bear in mind that after heavy rain the rocks can become slippery and access is more difficult, so choose your day carefully.
Along the route there's plenty to keep little explorers busy:
Playing by the stream
Crossing bridges
Spotting wildlife
Taking in the beautiful views across Loch Kinord from higher up
Enjoying a picnic on one of the benches near the start of the walk
☀️ Make a Day of It
If one short walk isn't enough, the surrounding Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve offers plenty more to explore. The longer Loch Kinord trail is a lovely option for families with older children or anyone wanting to spend the whole day outdoors.
🍰 Where to Eat Nearby
There are several great café options nearby in Aboyne, including:
Corner House
Black Faced Sheep
Spider on a Bicycle
The Boat Inn
Kite ( a new place in Dinnet serving pizza). Please check opening times and be aware that they do not have GF options.
Another lovely option is Cambus O'May Cheese & Milk Hoose Café, which has outdoor seating, a small play area for children, and is close to the suspension bridge, making it easy to combine with another mini adventure.
✨ Final Thoughts
Burn O'Vat is one of those walks that packs a lot into a relatively short distance. From interactive exhibits and gentle woodland paths to scrambling through rocks and exploring hidden waterfalls, it's the perfect mix of adventure and accessibility for families.
Whether you're visiting with toddlers, adventurous school-aged children, or simply looking for a scenic walk in Aberdeenshire, Burn O'Vat is well worth adding to your list.
