A Family Adventure to Blackdog Beach, Aberdeen

Blackdog Beach offers a quieter alternative to the busier spots of Balmedie and Newburgh.

Hi, I’m Jess. As a family we are always on the lookout for new adventures — from local gems in Aberdeenshire to hidden spots further afield.

Every walk we share is one we’ve enjoyed ourselves. If you find something new or notice an update I should make, please let me know!

🅿️ Getting There & Parking

Pop Blackdog Beach into Google Maps and head for the car park nearest the construction site.

What3Words: commands.nicknames.perusing.

There’s space for several cars, but if it’s especially busy, you can always park on the nearby streets — just be prepared for a slightly longer walk. They aren’t any of the barriers that they use to stop larger vehicles parking at the other beaches.

🚶‍♀️ Distance: As Long As You Like

The walk from the car park to the beach is only a few hundred metres, so it’s ideal for little legs (and parents carrying half the house in beach toys and snacks!).

After passing the metal gate, follow the path until you reach the sand. You can stop and set up camp right away or keep walking along the shore in either direction — just turn back whenever you’re ready.

🟡 Tip: The path can be bumpy and steep in spots, so it’s not ideal for buggies. Carriers are a better option for younger children.

🏖️ Why We Love It

Our kids adored Blackdog Beach — especially the rolling sand dunes and the chance to paddle independently in the shallow water (depending on the tide, of course).

It’s also a great place for a bit of impromptu “helicopter spotting” since aircraft often fly overhead, adding an extra dose of excitement for little ones.

✨ Highlights

  • Short, easy walk from the car park

  • Fantastic sand dunes for exploring and climbing

  • Shallow pools for paddling (check the tide!)

  • Peaceful and quiet — most people head to Balmedie or Newburgh instead

☕ Nearby Cafés

After your seaside adventure, why not grab a bite to eat or a warm drink at one of these nearby spots?
(Always check opening hours before you go!)

  • Smoke n Soul, The Old Smiddy, Bridge of Don

  • Pumpkin Spice Café, Potterton

  • Kings Church Coffee Bar

  • Parkhill Garden Centre, Dyce

💬 Final Thoughts

Blackdog Beach offers the perfect mix of peace, play, and coastal beauty — without the crowds. Whether you’re chasing waves, building sandcastles, or enjoying a quiet family picnic, it’s a lovely spot to unwind and let the kids roam free.
