Exploring Hackley Bay: A Hidden Gem Near Newburgh
If you’re looking for a stunning, secluded spot to enjoy with the family, Hackley Bay in Forvie National Nature Reserve should definitely be on your list. Nestled just past Newburgh, this hidden bay is the perfect place to escape for a peaceful walk and some beach time away from the crowds.
Hackley Bay is often quiet as it takes that little more effort to reach.
Hi, I’m Jess. As a family we are always on the lookout for new adventures — from local gems in Aberdeenshire to hidden spots further afield.
Every walk we share is one we’ve enjoyed ourselves. If you find something new or notice an update I should make, please let me know using the Get in Touch button below.
Getting There
We started our walk from the Waterside car park at Forvie National Nature Reserve. It’s a good-sized car park and free (as far as I remember). If you prefer, you can also access Hackley Bay from the visitor centre at Collieston. This route is said to be just as long but possibly more interesting, and the visitor centre itself is worth a stop if you have time.

The Walk
The circular walk is roughly 4 miles, following the blue heath trail towards Forvie Kirk before signposts guide you down to the bay. If you’re walking with little ones, a carrier or sling is a good idea. Some of the path is pram friendly, but there is a rather steep section to get down to the bay at the end.
On our warm summer visit, Hackley Bay was breathtaking—and we had the beach almost entirely to ourselves. The sandy stretch, framed by dramatic cliffs, feels like a private paradise.
We chose to return along the cliffs and then took the path back through the dunes. This added about half a mile to the walk (making it closer to 4.5–5 miles), so if you’d prefer to keep things shorter, simply retrace your steps.

Where to Refuel
After a day outdoors, a cosy café stop is a must. In Newburgh, the Trellis Café is a lovely option (plus there are some charming little shops nearby if you’re looking for a gift). If you’re heading back via Ellon, check out The Coffee Apothecary for great coffee and cake.
Final Thoughts
Hackley Bay is a fantastic family-friendly adventure if you love walking, wildlife, and quieter beaches. Whether you’re local or visiting Aberdeenshire, it’s well worth carving out a few hours to explore this hidden gem.
