Exploring the Blue Door Walk, Edzell

Tucked away in the charming village of Edzell lies one of Angus’ most talked-about trails – the Blue Door Walk, also known as the Rocks of Solitude. It’s a place that feels like stepping into another world, where narrow woodland paths lead you along the dramatic North Esk River and towards a stunning gorge.

Step through the Blue Door and into a magical woodland that changes with the seasons.

Getting There & Parking

Parking is available in a layby on the B966, though it’s limited and best avoided at weekends when it can get busy. You’ll find more space on the road leading towards Glen Esk. Alternatively, park in the village itself and begin your walk on the lane between the Old Post Office and Garage forecourt on the High Street. This option makes the walk longer (closer to 10km), but it’s a beautiful route, with the added bonus of a riverside paddle for the kids.

The Route

  • Distance: around 5km (longer if starting from the village)

  • Terrain: uneven woodland paths, not buggy-friendly

  • Notes: This is currently an out-and-back walk due to storm damage on one of the bridges.

If you’re following the Walk Highlands description, start from Stage 3 if parking at the layby. At Stage 7, retrace your steps back to the start. Or simply step through the Blue Door and wander – sometimes the best adventures are unplanned!

What to Expect

The Blue Door Walk is full of atmosphere. As soon as you step through that iconic door, the outside world feels far away. The wooded gorge, the sound of rushing water, and the winding narrow paths all add to its magic.

Highlights include:

  • Interesting, twisting trails perfect for adventurous kids (best for older children due to steep drops).

  • The dramatic gorge and waterfalls along the river.

  • A hidden tower near the Rocks of Solitude – see if you can spot it!

  • Picnic opportunities, whether on a bench or one of the many scenic spots along the way.

I visited in summer with Rosie in the carrier, letting her explore a little along the way. It’s not a trail I’d attempt alone with two small children, but older kids will love the sense of discovery.

After the Walk – Where to Refuel

Edzell and the surrounding area offer some lovely café stops to round off your adventure:

  • Sinclair’s Larder, Edzell – hearty meals and home baking.

  • Jo’s Sweet Treat – ice cream and classic pick ’n’ mix.

  • Brechin Garden Centre – a great family-friendly stop.

  • Castleton Farm Shop – perfect for local produce and a treat to take home.

✨ Whether you’re looking for a short scenic walk, a family adventure, or simply a magical spot to reconnect with nature, the Blue Door Walk in Edzell is worth every step.
